Southern California Community College Showcase (July 30- 31)

The Southern California Community College Showcase was held on Saturday, July 30 and Sunday, July 31 at Azusa Pacific University. Thirty-nine teams from throughout the state of California participated. Here is a report on the event. (We are only reporting on those prospects we observed and evaluated.)

Top Prospects:

6’2 SOPH Da’shawn Gomez   PG   Antelope Valley College (Inglewood HS). Gomez is a real athletic one man who is a good ball handler and a very good passer. He is effective in transition, pushing the fast break aggressively. He shows the ability to finish on the break and also distribute the ball for timely assist. He is a capable perimeter shooter with three point range and effective penetrator. Gomez looks to be a bottom level mid major prospect.

6’1” SOPH Jason Carmichael   SG/PG   Porterville College (Mt. Whitney HS). Carmichael is a strong and athletic combo guard who runs well. He is a solid handler and a real good passer who sees the floor well. He is effective in transition (finishes well) and shoots it fairly well with three point range. He is also a solid rebounder. He comes to play and gets a lot of things done. Carmichael is on the fence between upper level low and bottom level mid major prospect.

6’2 FROSH Michaelynn Scott   SG/PG   Antelope Valley College (Washington Prep). Scott is a very athletic combo guard with a nice burst of speed. He handles passes very well and does a really good job of pulling up both in transition and in a half-court setting. Scott moves well without the ball, can get to the basket on the drive and is an adequate outside shooter. Scott projects to be a bottom level mid major prospect.

6’8 FROSH Taevanwe Morrison   C   Bakersfield College (South HS). Morrison is a fairly athletic five man who can run the floor. He is a decent ball handler who has an okay one-bounce drive and he is a fairly good rebounder. Morrison could show a little bit more offensively. He is a likely mid major prospect.

6’1 FROSH Joseph Soto   PG/SG   Ventura College (Rio Mesa HS). Soto is a very solid combo guard with nice athleticism and skills. He is a good ball handler and passer and does a very nice job in transition finding the open man. He pulls up well in the half court, is a good shooter with three point range and can break down the defender and get to the basket on a consistent basis. Soto is a definite mid major prospect.

6’7 SOPH Corey Hall   C   Ventura College (Ada McKinnley HS). Hall is a fairly athletic five man who can run the floor. He is a decent ball handler who has a nice, one bounce drive, and he can pass the ball. He shoots it ok, he is a capable post up player and a real solid rebounder. Hall is a low major prospect.

6’5 SOPH Wesley Bartole   College of the Canyons (Canyon HS). Bartole is a fairly athletic combo forward. He is a decent handler with a real nice one-bounce drive. He can finish in transition and he pulls up okay in the half court. He is also a good rebounder. Bartole is a low major prospect.

6’5 SOPH Markese Fields   PF   Chabot College (Mid Peninsula HS). Fields is an athletic combo forward who can run and jump. He is a capable ball handler and passer, he can pull up in the half court and he shoots it okay with three point range. His long arms allow him to be a nice shot blocker and he’s also a capable rebounder. Fields is an upper level low major prospect worth a higher look.

6’0 SOPH Nolan Abertnathy   SG/PG   Citrus College (Bonita HS). Abernathy is an extremely competitive combo guard who runs the floor real hard. He’s a good ball handler who can make plays in transition and pushes the break very hard. He can get to the basket on the drive and he shoots it ok with range to three. By far, his greatest asset is his ability to compete. Abernathy is a low major prospect.

6’6 SOPH Dominique Carr   SF   Citrus College (JW North HS). Carr is an athletic wing who can run the floor. He is a decent ball handler who can finish in transition and he shoots it ok with three point range. Carr needs some work defensively but is an upper level low major prospect.

Jefferson recently committed to the University of Hawaii for the 2011-2012 school year.

6’5 SOPH Chuck Gray   SF   El Camino College (Bellflower HS). Gray is a fairly athletic three man who runs ok. He’s a capable ball handler who can pull up in the half court. An unknown beforehand who certainly is on the radar of numerous college coaches at this point. Mulamba is a very athletic five man who can run the floor. He has fairly good hands, he can dribble operate on the block and he’s a good rebounder who outlets the ball well. He does not have a lot of basketball experience and he needs a better feel for the game, but he has a very nice upside. Mulamba is easily a mid major prospect but due to clock issues he’s a division two/NAIA prospect only.

5’11 SOPH Kalob Hatcher   PG   Irvine Valley College (Foothills Christian HS). Thatcher is a fairly athletic one man who knows how to run a team. 6’8 SOPH Shannen Garner   C   LA Southwest College (Hope Centre HS). Garner is a five man with fairly good strength who is an ok athlete. He’s got good hands, can pass the ball, he’s got a decent jump hook on the block and he rebounds the ball fairly well. Garner is a hard worker who will likely be a low major prospect.

6’2 SOPH Nick Capiti   PG/SG   Merritt College (Bishop Odowd HS). Capiti is a strong and athletic combo guard with a nice burst of speed. He is really aggressive and plays with an attack mentality. He handles it well and he’s effective in transition (can finish and he pulls up well in the half court). He is a consistently good driver and his primary need is to develop a consistent outside shot. Capiti is a low major prospect.

6’7 FROSH Eric Nelson   C   Merrit College (El Cerrito High School). Nelson had somewhat of a coming out party at this event, finally showing his real merit as a player. He is long and athletic and runs the floor well. His length allows him to be an impressive shot blocker. He’s a decent mid range shooter and a capable rebounder. Nelson will be a low major prospect when it’s all said and done.

6’7 FROSH Andre Warren   PF   Mira Costa College (Colton HS). Warren is a fairly athletic four man who can run the floor. He’s a decent ball handler and an ok passer who has a nice one- bounce drive. He is a fair athlete who can run the floor. He is an impressive post up player, showing the ability to dribble operate on the block and has a nice jump hook. He’s also a fairly good mid-range shooter and a solid rebounder. Simpson is likely an upper level low major prospect worth higher consideration.

6’7 SOPH Delvon Henderson   PF/C   Reedly College (Sunnyside HS). Henderson is an athletic combo post man who runs well and has long arms. He’s a bit thin and could use some bulk and strength. He’s a decent ball handler with an ok one-bounce drive. He can dribble operate on the block some and has an ok jump hook. He can also pull up in the half court. He is a decent rebounder but needs to pursue the ball better on the glass. Henderson may be a little bit soft but is a likely low major prospect.

He handles it and pulls up very well in transition and in the half court. He shoots it ok with three point range and he is a consistent driver, breaking down the defender and getting to the basket on a regular basis. Abdi is an upper level low major prospect at this point, who will certainly go higher when it’s all said and done.

6’5 SOPH Rodney Black   SF   San Jose City College (Perris HS). Black is a fairly athletic three man who can run. He can handle the ball and pass it, he moves fairly well without it and he shoots it ok with three point range. He is also a decent driver and a capable rebounder.
